State legislators to hold hearing on Illinois' finances before gov's budget address next week

The Chicago TribuneFebruary 15, 2012

CHICAGO (AP) - An Illinois Senate panel is expected to meet to get a snapshot of the state's finances a week before Gov. Pat Quinn gives his budget address.

Democratic state senators Heather Steans of Chicago and Dan Kotowski of Park Ridge will lead the Wednesday afternoon panel.

They'll hear testimony from the governor's office of management and budget and the Civic Federation, which has already predicted big financial troubles for Illinois. The Chicago-based group says Illinois' pile of unpaid bills could nearly quadruple over the next five years, from $9.2 billion to $34.8 billion unless state officials take action.

Steans says she wants to provide context for members of the panel so that everyone is on the same page when the budget is presented.

Quinn's budget address takes place Feb. 22.
