Snyder proposes adding $45M to fight crime in 2013 budget
Lansing- Gov. Rick Snyder will propose investing an additional $45 million in public safety as part of his 2013 budget proposal to be unveiled in Lansing today, The Detroit News has confirmed.
Snyder noted in his State of the State address in January that Michigan has four cities - Detroit, Flint, Pontiac and Saginaw - that regularly turn up on the nation's Top 10 list of most violent cities. The governor has promised to roll out a detailed crime-fighting strategy in a Special Message to the Legislature on Public Safety in March.
He has said public safety is fundamental to economic development.
Snyder is widely expected to deliver a budget today with few increases or frills. Spending down debt, saving for a rainy day and providing cost-cutting incentives were themes from his first annual budget that are likely to be repeated in the budget for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1.
The current budget included money that school districts and communities could qualify for only by adopting "best practices" such as privatizing or consolidating services. The Department of Corrections Budget called for $13.25 million to be saved by privatizing food services and stores.
