Michigan House approves school funding cuts

Businessweek | by Tim Martin | May 6, 2011

The Michigan House has narrowly approved legislation that would cut state funding to public schools, community colleges and universities for the budget year that begins in October.

The Republican-led chamber approved the bill by a 57-53 vote Thursday, mostly along party lines.

The House bill is different than Senate-passed legislation that also would cut education funding. Differences will have to be reconciled before a budget can be adopted.

The House proposal would cut school funding by an additional $256 to $297 per student. That's on top of a $170 per student cut that's already in place and would be carried over into next fiscal year.

Funding for community colleges and universities also would be cut.
