Iowa Gov. Branstad calls for $6.2 billion budget

The Chicago TribuneJanuary 10, 2012

DES MOINES, Iowa- Besides offering his priorities in the Condition of the State speech, Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad has proposed a $6.2 billion state budget that would increase spending about $230 million over this year.

Branstad aides say that amounts to about a 3.8 percent increase over the current fiscal year, which ends June 30. They note projections call for state tax collections to grow 4.2 percent in the coming fiscal year.

Under Branstad's proposed budget, 58 percent would pay for education programs, while 26 percent would go toward health and human services programs. The judicial and prison system would make up about 10 percent of state spending.

Aides say about half of state revenues will come from income taxes, and the sales tax will generate about 34 percent of revenue.
