Deal's budget plan: Merge or eliminate some state agencies
Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal will propose the consolidation or elimination of some state agencies in his 2013 budget, he told The Associated Press on Thursday. The plan, which is intended to save money and help government run more smoothly, will be presented to lawmakers at next week's legislative session. Deal said the plan could bring layoffs, but he did not provide a total number of how many people could be affected.
According to AP, proposals include:
· The elimination of the State Personnel Administration, which oversees human resources. Duties would shift to a division of the Department of Administrative Services, a move that would save an estimated $850,000 and eliminate 40 jobs.
· Privatizing the state's aviation services and selling state aircraft used for passenger flights.
· Move Georgia’s safety inspection program from the Department of Labor to the Department of Agriculture.
