Brownback releases a tight Kansas budget proposal
Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback proposed a tight state budget Thursday that would spend slightly less in state tax dollars, after telling legislators that he wants to maintain healthy cash reserves.
Brownback's administration told legislators that the spending plan for the fiscal year beginning July 1 is designed to promote financial security and anticipates that federal funds will decline in the future, as the federal government wrestles with its own fiscal problems. Budget Director Steve Anderson provided the first details during a briefing for the House Appropriations Committee.
"We believe our budget has brought fiscal stability with the approach we have taken," Anderson told the committee.
The budget plan calls for spending a little less than $6.1 billion in general state revenues on government programs, compared to a little more than $6.1 billion under the current budget. The difference is about $39 million, or a little less than 1 percent.
