Higher Education

Higher education allocations accounted for 10.2 of state total expenditures in Fiscal Year 2010, according to the National Association of State Budget Officers. Higher education budgets are attractive options for governors and lawmakers who need to cut down on their state's spending. States like Wisconsin and Pennsylvania have already slashed their state universities' budgets by several millions as of early 2012, with Pennsylvania in particular proposing a dramatic reduction of $230 million (about 25%) of its state university funds.

As states continue to cut their budgets, SBS will keep you updated on higher education funding, state-by-state, as well as listing options for meaningful reform and suggestions for increasing transparency.
