Indiana to Receive Award for Innovative Budget and Policy

State Government and Governor recognized for innovation

ALEXANDRIA, VA. -  State Budget Solutions, the nation's top state budget education and watchdog group, will present the "Reality Check" award to the state of Indiana for its innovative use of a "reality-based budgeting" process. SBS will also give Indiana's Governor Mitch Daniels the "Real Leader Award."  Governor Daniels helped to ensure a balanced budget and spearheaded education reform efforts. He created a plan to help Indiana achieve what should be long-term stability.

Indiana used reality-based budgeting to make the state more fiscally responsible and financially sound.  Governor Daniels passed a balanced budget with a government spending cap and without a general tax increase. Indiana lawmakers also enacted K-12 education reform, including linking teacher pay raises to classroom performance and expanding the numbers of available school vouchers. In addition, Indiana reformed collective bargaining and created health savings accounts for state employees. The awards will be presented on a Thursday conference call with media and policy leaders.
